Pilates is a mind-body exercise system designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. Originally called Contrology, Joseph developed this method of exercise and apparatus, notably the reformer, motivated by his own health needs and those of his fellow prisoners, interned in England during WW1.

In 1926 Joseph moved to the United States where he met his wife Clara and together they opened a fitness studio in New York which became the prominent place for New York ballet dancers and professional boxers to exercise.

Following on from Joseph and Clara’s success, many of their instructor apprentices went on to open Pilates studios across the globe, continuing to teach the Contrology method.

The beauty of Pilates is that it can be tailored to all people regardless of age, ability or fitness goals. Regular pilates practice under the guidance of a qualified instructor will help to prevent injury, relieve pain, improve posture and coordination, build strength and endurance and contribute to overall better health. All our instructors at The Pilates Nook are accredited and experienced and continue to advance their knowledge and education.
